Conditions for filming Pictures Collection items To minimise handling of the rare and unique items in the Pictures Collection, the National Library provides a photographic service. Items are each photographed once, by the Library’s Photographic Section, and copies of the photograph are available for purchase and for use in publications, films and videos. If you need a moving, rather than a still image, you may request permission to film Pictures material. Some items which are particularly fragile, in use in an exhibition or have particular access restrictions, may not be filmed. Items in copyright may only be filmed if written evidence is produced that the copyright holder has authorised the filming. ....

The Strategy serves to promote the Library’s leadership role in equity and diversity initiatives and strengthen our culture of excellence. The Library’s ....
Drawings of Aborigines and scenery, New South Wales, nla.pic-an2962715 One of the items of considerable significance in the National Library’s Pictures Collection is the bound volume commonly referred to as ‘the Lycett Album’. It contains twenty watercolours painted prior to 1828 by Joseph Lycett (c. 1775-1828). Among Lycett’s watercolours are the only known depictions from the period of Aboriginal people engaged in activities such as spearing eels and eating meat from beached whales. ....
The Library seeks to build comprehensive collections where relevant materials are acquired to the greatest extent possible; representative collections where the Library selects a manageable amount of material to represent a type, creator or subject; and selective collections where items of national priority or special significance are identified and collected, or where depth of collecting is prioritised above breadth. This section of the policy is arranged in sequence from comprehensive to selective, recognising that such a continuum is neither fully linear nor completely exclusive. Web archiving for example, falls midway along this imaginary line, and is by turns comprehensive, selective and representative. ....
