Stick Mareebo was woken at midnight. He was only 14, so his big brother rigged the pillows-and-blankets trick to fool Mum and Dad, and off they crept into the warm Jamaican night. The river was low. They rolled up their trousers and followed the bass into the darkness. âThat was my first sound-system dance,â Mareebo recalls over rum cocktails and reggae at the faux-tropical LuWOW Tiki Bar in Little Collins Street. âWe went to see King Yellowman, who was an albino Jamaican guy that rose to prominence as the king of the DJs in the mid-1980s â¦
