As Covid-19 continues to spread around Laos, fears are growing that underprivileged residents, including minority Christians, could end up suffering a major health crisis.
The official tally of infections in the communist nation of slightly over 7 million stands at around 6,000 while at least seven Laotians are known to have died of the disease.
VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): Health workers plan to begin administering the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine across the country on August 2, although vaccinations in some priority areas got under way on July 26, according to the Centre of Information and Education for Health.
These areas were prioritised because of high infection rates and low vaccine uptake, and include Champassak, Savannakhet, Khammuan and Saravan provinces.
Director General of the Department of Hygiene and Health Promotion under the Ministry of Health, Dr Phonepaseuth Ounaphome, said the main rollout of the 1,008,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson was scheduled to begin on Aug 2 after the vaccine had been delivered to provincial health authorities.
