Workers called out the Duterte government on Labor Day, Saturday, May 1, for being irresponsible in its pandemic response and leaving laborers to be laid off without government intervention.
This irresponsible government is deadly, as so many working people are at risk of dying from the pandemic or from the poverty that COVID-19 has made worse, labor group Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa (SENTRO) said in a statement on Saturday.

Rise of low-quality jobs reflects pandemic scars in PH labor market

President Rodrigo Duterte s economic team has asserted on several occasions that jobs have returned to pre-pandemic levels.
As of February 2021, overall employment stood at 43.2 million, translating to 1.9 million more Filipinos with jobs compared to January 2021.
This means we have surpassed our pre-pandemic employment level of 42.6 million in January 2020, the economic managers said last March.
But what type of jobs are these, exactly?

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said on Wednesday, April 28, that workers and employers consulted by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) oppose the proposal requiring national police clearances for transactions.
Bello told reporters that the department has yet to reply to Philippine National Police chief General Debold Sinas on the matter.
The trend is that workers, employers, and NEDA (National Economic and Development Authority) are not in favor of the proposal. And, of course, ARTA (Anti-Red Tape Authority) because it goes against ease of doing business, said Bello in a mix of English and Filipino. ....
