Cover crops making farm carbon-positive

Walter Furlong Grain s tillage farm in Co Wexford is sequestering 636kg CO2/ac. The farm is sequestering more carbon than it is producing, with no reward.
In the meantime, agriculture is coming under increasing pressure to reduce emissions, despite not being able to take account of sequestration, and the tillage area has declined by 40,000ha in four years (2015-2018) with little notice by officials.
At the Irish Tillage and Land Use Society’s (ITLUS) summer webinar, Wally Furlong explained that his father Walter has been farming since 1980 and moved to minimum tillage in 2001. He describes this in the short video below. ....

A Courtnacuddy man who died in a tragic workplace accident on Monday has been described as a colossal loss to his family and friends.
41 year old Philip Reck was killed in a freak incident at the Cooney Furlong grain store in Caim where he worked for 18 years.
A small private funeral was held this morning where he was remembered by his wife Martina, daughters Aideen and Eve and his extended family.
Philip was also commended for his work with the group Base Ireland where he helped grow from it’s inception 7 years ago.
The group aims to help educate farmers about biodiversity. ....

Accident takes the life of Philip Reck


Philip Reck died following a workplace accident.
The tragic news of the untimely accidental death of Philip Reck rocked the tillage world and his local community in Wexford earlier this week.
Philip was a well-known employee of the Cooney Furlong Grain Company and was highly respected in tillage circles across the island.
His loss will be deeply felt by colleagues in the company where his professionalism and organisational skills were important to the running of the farm and the business. He was well known nationally as a pioneer and driver of catch crop production, and placed huge emphasis on the health of soils. ....
