I think it is better to view it not as a conclusion, like this is the real custer, but more like a question. Who was the real custer . What we know about this guy. Little bighorn is so pervasive when we talk about George Custer, the whole man is the mistakes he made on that day. That is not the case. Yet a whole life and a whole character and he was a whole person. The book is about trying to get to the root of that question. If we can strip away all the things that have been written since then, all of the history, Everything Else and just talk about the man himself. That is what it is supposed to be about.
