Many civic organizations struggle to stay alive


LAGRANGE — Not all that many years ago, any motorists arriving in any number of small towns around northeast Indiana to communities such as LaGrange or Howe or Wolcottville, would have been greeted when they entered those towns by a welcome sign that included the names of most of the civic and fraternal organizations that also called that community home.
From the Lions clubs to the Jaycees to Rotary, Kiwanis, Eagles, and Moose, many of those organizations once dominated the local philanthropic landscape. In the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s, local social, civic and philanthropic organizations and clubs were at the heart of most communities, but many have disappeared, and most of those that remain are struggling to survive. ....

In a celebration of philanthropy and achievements, more than 250 Montclair State University alumni, friends, benefactors and community members gathered on campus to raise money for student scholarships as well as to recognize the distinguished service of Montclair State President Susan A. Cole and honor four influential alumni on Saturday, May 22, 2021.
The Montclair State University Foundation announced that more than $4 million was raised in scholarship and program funds for future generations of students, including nearly $750,000 as part of the Annual Scholarship Fundraiser. Some $3.5 million of that was pledged in Dr. Cole’s honor. ....

Community Foundation Gault grant goes to hospice and theater efforts

The Wayne County Community Foundation (WCCF) is announces the first grants from the Stanley C. Gault Philanthropic Leadership Fund.
In May, the Wayne County Community Foundation board approved the Fund’s Advisory Committee’s recommendations for the following grants:
Ohio’s LifeCare Hospice received a $50,000 grant for its Hospice Center for Supportive Care Campaign
Downtown Arts Theater Inc. received a $20,000 grant for the purchase of the theater building in downtown Wooster. An $80,000 grant has been approved for Phase 2 of the project, to be awarded when the project is within 10% of its stated campaign goal.
The Stanley C. Gault Philanthropic Leadership Fund was established at the Wayne County Community Foundation with a grant from the Burton D. Morgan Foundation to perpetuate the ideal of service and active involvement in philanthropy Stan Gault embodied throughout his life. ....
