Inaugural Projects for Progress recipients announced
Awardees include three Penn teams that will help address health care, education, and environmental justice, respectively, in Philadelphia.
The University announced Friday its inaugural Projects for Progress prize recipients, which include three teams of Penn students, faculty, and staff. The teams, awarded up to $100,000 each to support their initiatives, all enhance and promote equity and inclusion in Philadelphia by addressing health care, education, and environmental justice, respectively.
Established by President Amy Gutmannlast summer, and managed by the new Office of Social Equity & Community, Projects for Progress are meant to build on Penn’s longstanding commitment to social justice and civic engagement in Philadelphia. ....

Solebury School senior earns gold in National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Casey Epstein-Gross, a senior attending Solebury School, recently was awarded a gold medal and multiple regional gold and silver keys in the 2021 National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, accolades presented by the Philadelphia Writing Project. The gold medal accomplishment is the highest level of distinction. 
Epstein-Gross won with her critical essay, Looking Through the Window : Narrative Form and the Act of Reading as Voyeurism in Wuthering Heights.  Since 1923, the awards have recognized some of America’s most celebrated artists and writers while they were teenagers, including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates and Andy Warhol.  ....

Striking a balance in camp planning
Amidst the uncertainties of the pandemic and with time to plan, this year organizers of summer camp offerings at Penn have developed an array of in-person and virtual programs.
In-person summer camps at the Morris Arboretum are moving forward this year, after having been canceled last year. Safety measures such as mask-wearing and smaller groups will address COVID-19 concerns. (Image: Morris Arboretum)
As the snow recedes and the temperatures climb, parents are thinking about summer camp.
Among many other disturbances wrought by the pandemic, many children lost the opportunity to attend camp last summer. What this summer will look like on the pandemic front is still unclear, but at Penn many are busy planning enriching activities for young people to play and learn, both online and in person. ....
