Starbucks strike: Workers at Philadelphia store picket over alleged retaliation for union drive

Starbucks workers at the 12th and Market streets coffeeshop in Center City began a 24-hour strike Friday morning. They say they want the store's manager fired and for the chain to be more friendly to the Starbucks workers union. The employees say they've faced intimidation, retaliation and poor working conditions since they voted to unionize last month. It's one of five Philadelphia stores that voted to unionize this year. ....

School District of Philadelphia required to install water fountains with lead filtration by 2025

All School District of Philadelphia schools will have lead-filtering water fountains installed by 2025. The upgrade is required by a bill unanimously passed by Philadelphia City Council last week. It requires all facilities maintained by school district have these new fountains to ensure students have clean drinking water at school. Philly Council Unanimously Passes 'Right to Recall' Laws to Protect Service Workers – Next City


On December 10, the Philadelphia City Council unanimously passed the Black Workers Matter Economic Recovery Package, a set of three bills that includes the right to return to those same jobs as workplaces re-open.
It was a victory not only for organized labor, but also for broader community organizing in solidarity with low-wage workers, led by groups like POWER, an interfaith, multi-racial social justice network of 50 congregations across Philadelphia and about as many more across the state.
“I had not [testified] in person in city council before and here I was doing it online,” says POWER Board Member Frances Upshaw, who testified in support of the bills. “It gives you some added angst. But I was happy to be able to do it. All of us have something to do to help these situations.” ....
