The north-east fishing community has paid its final respects to one of the sector’s leading lights.
More than 100 friends and fellow fishermen lined the route around Peterhead Harbour as ex-skipper James West’s funeral cortege took him on one last drive through the port where he spent such a large part of his life.
The West family’s boats – Fruitful Bough, Golden Sceptre, Forever Faithful and Westro – were lined up along the quay as the hearse passed. ....

It was the first state-owned passenger-carrying railway in Britain; a product of Victoriana which ferried criminals to a place of hard labour in the north-east of Scotland.
And although it is more than 50 years since the closure of the Peterhead Prison railway, a new exhibition is being organised to highlight how the route ran past such places as the Long John Distillery at Glenugie and the lost village of Burnhaven.
The service, which was operational for the prison from 1888, ran between the Admiralty Yard  – which has become the location of the new HMP Grampian building – and the quarry, which was situated two-and-a-half-miles south of Peterhead. ....

Coastguard teams in Peterhead take on their first callout of the New Year

Coastguard teams from Peterhead and Cruden Bay received their first callout of the New Year after a fishing vessel required assistance.
After taking on water while in Peterhead Harbour, the vessel had started to tilt before teams arrived on the scene at around 1pm.
Joined by the Scottish Fire and Rescue service, emergency service workers began to pump water out of the ship, while a RNLI Peterhead Lifeboat provided safety cover.
Traced back to an on board ice machine, the leak was fixed and the vessel was corrected from its tilt before teams on the scene stood down. ....
