When Walter Mondale the pioneering vice president under President Carter ended up on the losing end of Ronald Reagan’s landmark 49-state landslide in 1984, he fretted that it would dominate, even warp, his legacy.
But in reality Mondale, who as a senator was a spokesman for racial justice and an opponent of the Vietnam War, was a fiery reformer who selected the first female member of a national political ticket; an introspective populist who tried to rally Americans to care for the poor during the Reagan-era ascendancy of industrialists and bankers; and, in retirement, a beloved senior statesman of the Democratic Party and sober-minded prairie practitioner of common sense. ....

Trump stalwarts to the right of them, angry progressives to the left of them, into the valley of impeachment-trial defeat ride the Democratic Senate leaders.
Stormed at with Republican shot and shell – and about a dozen votes short of the 67 required to convict Donald J. Trump of the “high crimes and misdemeanors” set out in the American Constitution – the Senate nonetheless presses forward Tuesday with its trial of the 45th president.
With his first Senate trial (and acquittal) almost exactly a year in the past, this second trial (and its likely acquittal) has been transformed from what the American Founders considered a forbidding rite of judgment into what since the ascendancy of Mr. Trump has become nearly a rote ritual. ....

The results of the 2020 Census will show that more than 215,000 Americans, in the coming year, will reach the age of 100, and Russell adds, “All of them will have valid Florida driver’s licenses.”
The unreelected 45th president is (sadly) that rare human being with neither an embarrassment gene nor a sense of humor. A sense of humor usually indicates perspective in its possessor. Our two most previous presidents, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican George W. Bush, both of whom were reelected, were not afraid to laugh publicly at their own perceived problems or shortcomings. ....
