Old vines have a strange effect on winemakers. They exert an emotional pull close to enchantment – a kind of sylvan magic that becomes more powerfully bewitching the older the vine is. You notice it most keenly when you’re with a winegrower in their vineyard. You see the affection as they pat the trunks of the oldest plants, the wistful misting over of the eyes as they proudly reel off the vines’ age. The relationship may be emotional, but it’s not irrational, even if the science on the subject is somewhat sketchy and undeveloped. ....

Bordeaux 2020 en primeur wines: What to expect
Jane Anson reveals the style of the Bordeaux 2020 vintage, the best-performing appellations and châteaux to look out for in this sneak preview ahead of her full verdict on the wines - as the first en primeur releases begin to emerge.
Look out for our individual appellation reports and wines this week.
For the second year running, this was an unusual en primeur season, where very few external tasters were able to get to Bordeaux.
But unlike last year’s 2019 vintage, which was tasted almost entirely from my kitchen table, I was able to visit a large number of properties for this campaign (with full precautions in place – Ducru-Beaucaillou, for example, was using medical-grade techniques to disinfect between each visitor). ....

Colin Hay
In the first of a series of appellation profiles to be published over the next few months, our Bordeaux correspondent,
Colin Hay, revisits the 2018 vintage in Saint-Emilion, providing an overview of the appellation in this challenging, heterogeneous yet potentially excellent vintage, and detailed tasting notes on 179 wines. His Pomerol profile will follow shortly, with articles on each of the leading appellations of the Médoc and Pessac-Léognan to be published later in the year.
My overview of the 2018 vintage – enthusiastically drafted, as I recall, on the train back from Bordeaux after ....

Wines from the best, for a bit less | Wine

Penfolds Max’s Shiraz, South Australia, Australia 2018 (£1
)
In a post-match interview after a 7-0 away win for his team just before Christmas, Liverpool FC manager Jürgen Klopp wondered aloud if it was better to have one 7-0 win or seven 1-0 wins. Wine producers sometimes ask a similar question: is it better to make large quantities of keenly priced wine as well as possible – or to spare no expense or effort to make the very finest wine possible in tiny quantities? Few producers bridge the divide between the everyday and the special occasion, equally adept at managing millions of litres and a handful of barrels. But one such is Penfolds, whose vast range moves from sound wines under a tenner to Australia’s most expensive wine (Grange) via such polished, warming winter weekend treats as the Max’s Shiraz. ....
