“My dear Lady Kroesig, I have only ever read one book in my life, and that is White Fang. It’s so frightfully good I’ve never bothered to read another.” So says Uncle Matthew in Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love, a glossy new adaptation of which begins on BBC One tomorrow, with Lily James as Linda Radlett (Nancy’s alter ego), and Dominic West as Uncle Matthew, the “wicked lord of fiction”, who hunts his children on horseback with bloodhounds, and takes tea under the entrenching tool, “still covered with blood and hairs”, with which he “whacked to death eight Germans one by one as they ....

Eyes shut, dancing with champagne glass in hand, Lily James is a picture of 1930s glamour in the new Sunday-night BBC drama, The Pursuit of Love, a tale of hedonism, romance and high society.
The series is pure escapism, adapted from The Pursuit of Love, a novel written by Nancy Mitford about her own colourful life with her sisters, Pamela, Diana, Unity, Jessica and Deborah.
Lily says: “It’s a wonderful celebration of the Mitford sisters. Nancy wrote this book about her life, her sisters and how they grew up. ....

Who wrote the book The Pursuit of Love? | Great British Life

In 1933 Nancy married Peter Rodd and they set up home in London. Although she painted a picture of wedded bliss, in reality they were an ill-suited couple and Rodd was openly unfaithful. Sadly, Nancy also suffered two miscarriages. Eventually the couple separated and later divorced in the 1950s.
Facing sadness in her personal life, Nancy concentrated on two further novels:
Wigs on the Green (1935) and
Pigeon Pie (1940). She also edited two volumes of historical correspondence:
The Ladies of Alderley (1938) and
The Stanleys of Alderley (1939). As a novelist, Nancy’s first four books didn’t attract great attention, but her fifth –  ....

The Famous, Scandalous, and Half Nazi Mitford Sisters

Last week, the trailer for upcoming BBC miniseries period drama
The Pursuit of Love was released, and being the literary nerd that I am, once I saw that it was based on a book written by a woman, I ended up going into a deep dive about the author, Nancy Mitford. Nancy Mitford was part of a scandalous and celebrated family where she was one of six sisters (and one brother) whose paths in life all took interesting turns during and following World War II.
If you want a little hint of what’s to come, the sisters were described by The Times journalist Ben Macintyre as: “Diana the Fascist, Jessica the Communist, Unity the Hitler-lover; Nancy the Novelist; Deborah the Duchess and Pamela the unobtrusive poultry connoisseur.” ....

Lord Rennell: the unsung British hero who took on the Mafia

When 48-year-old Francis Rodd, 2nd Lord Rennell, was appointed Chief Civil Affairs Officer of Allied occupied Sicily in 1943, he had a major bone of contention with the Americans. They had sacked all the Italian fascist officials but replaced them with local Mafia bosses. Some of the American officers were too close to the mobsters and the British administrator vowed to break their hold over the island.
It was a dangerous task, but for Rennell, who left his career in the City to explore the Sahara in his 20s, it was just another interesting challenge. During the time he was in charge of law and order on the island, he perhaps came closest to smashing the pernicious influence of the Cosa Nostra. ....
