March 31, 2021 - 1:30 PM Given increased COVID-19 cases, an uptick in interest by skiers from outside the region and the unauthorized partying at a Big White restaurant earlier this week, the resort has decided to close on Monday, April 5 rather than April 11. “We made the decision to stay open until April 11 back in June of last year,” Peter Plimmer, president and CEO of Big White Ski Resort Ltd. said in a news release. “Since then, a lot has changed. In the past week, even more has changed.” With Whistler and Blackcomb being ordered to close on Monday and other ski hills scheduled to close April 5, there’s been increased interest from Lower Mainland residents trying to book rooms and lift tickets at Big White, the release states. ....

The ski resort said since the initial travel advisories in late November, the resort and its reservation service have cancelled $7.3-million in lift ticket and accommodation bookings. The business said it has received hundreds upon hundreds of emails, messages and comments from families and individuals disappointed by these decisions. Over and above the $7.3 million is the lost revenue for the other departments on the mountain – including the ski and board school, food & beverage, equipment rental, hard and soft good sales, retail, events and activities. ....
Big White Ski Resort has cancelled reservations for guests who reside outside the Central Okanagan as a cluster of COVID-19 infections linked to the mountain grows. Skiers and boarders who don’t live near the mountain that’s just outside of Kelowna, BC will have to wait until the public health recommendation against non-essential travel expires on January 8. The mountain is encouraging only season pass holders and locals to visit the resort until January 9, in keeping with public health advice. The mountain has reached out to all guests whose addresses indicate they live out of town to offer a full refund for their reservation or an opportunity to re-book later. ....
