London and Middlesex County have had several large, deadly outbreaks during the pandemic. Country Terrace in Komoka had 26 COVID-19 deaths, Middlesex Terrace in Delaware had 18 resident deaths and a cluster of outbreaks at University Hospital in November and December killed 26 people.
There have been 12 COVID-19 deaths reported in London and surrounding Middlesex County this month among more than 3,300 new cases, the highest monthly cast count since the pandemic began.
Of the 12 local COVID-19 deaths reported in April, at least seven were people in their 60s.
The health unit’s COVID-19 vaccine blitz in long-term care and high-risk retirement homes in mid-January, and the opening of vaccine eligibility to the 70-and-older crowd in March helped reduce the death toll of the third wave, Summers said.
