Book on Joseph Ives reveals untold story of clockmaker

BRISTOL – The American Clock & Watch Museum has just published a new book, “Joseph Ives and the Looking Glass Clock,” as author Mary Jane Dapkus tells the previously untold stories about one of Bristol’s best-known clockmakers. The book includes an addendum analyzing Ives’ looking glass clock movements written by Peter Gosnell, retired professor of applied technology at the University of the Arts, London.
Joseph Ives (1782-1862) was one of 10 children born to Amasa and Huldah Shaylor Ives, in Wallingford. The family was related by marriage to the Roberts family of Bristol. Gideon Roberts is recorded as the first clockmaker to have worked in Bristol, and it is likely that he trained Joseph and his brothers in clockmaking. ....

Perhaps, in the decades to come, some enterprising religious historian will study how the coronavirus pandemic of 2020 affected Christian magazine journalism. Fair warning: You won’t find anything terribly eye-opening in CT’s books coverage.
As the editor chiefly responsible for that coverage, I remember feeling a tad sheepish at our morning check-in meetings during those first few locked-down weeks in March and April.
