HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Dozens of runners and walkers hit the streets of Petal Saturday to raise money for the Petal Children’s Task Force.
Runners took part in the ninth annual “Lighthouse Dash” at Hinton Park.
About $40,000 was raised this year for the organization, which provides food to those in need.
The event featured a 5K run and a two-mile walk.
“We help over 400 people a month,” said Dee Dee Lowery, race director. “Our homeless folks have picked up over the last year as well, and so, we’re helping a lot of those.” ....

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - People across the Pine Belt are experiencing food insecurity like never before because of the pandemic.
Food pantries and soup kitchens report seeing a 30% to 50% increase across the state.
This week, Extra Table teamed up with some gulf coast fisherman for an extra special delivery to food pantries and soup kitchens.
“Extra table is one of those great organizations in our community that when there’s extra, they bring it here to Christian Services so that we can help get it out to other agencies and the people in the community who need it,” said Maggie West, Community Outreach Director at Christian Ministries in Hattiesburg. ....

PETAL, Miss. (WDAM) - The Petal Children’s Task Force handed out food boxes on Friday to over 300 families from the area who are in need.
The nonprofit organization helps feed families throughout the year, but the holidays are especially important in making sure the hungry have something to eat during Christmas.
Volunteers from the Forrest County Sheriff’s Department, the Petal Police and Petal Fire Department were on hand directing traffic and loading the food boxes into the vehicles. ....
