Life is not that simple – there are so many challenges, health, making a living, finding a partner, building a family. There are so many obstacles and agendas. Some people seem to have it all, while for others life is a series of struggles, hurdles and challenges. Just ask any parent with a child or children with Mental Health issues. Not an easy situation. One philosophy is that these challenges come to alert and correct our personality and soul. ....
Pesach Sheini gives us the inner strength to turn our lives around
My older sister taught me not to use the words “off the derech” when describing kids who aren’t Torah observant at the moment. She prefers “teens on a detour in life,” or perhaps more delicately, “teens taking the scenic route.” When I was a teen many moons ago, it was common to go through what we called “idiot years,” normally around the years of 16 and 17. Today, I warn parents that “idiot years” can begin after bar or bas mitzvah. (But they needn’t worry. It almost always gets better somewhere in their late twenties!) ....

As a yeshiva high school student attending DRS, through learning at Yeshivat Kerem B’Yavneh, receiving semicha from RIETS and a master’s from Azrieli, Rabbi Ariel Schreier had a particular affinity for the study of Mishnayot, finding their brevity and focus exciting. Currently a third grade boys’ rebbe and fifth grade girls’ Mishnah instructor at RYNJ, Rabbi Schreier saw an opportunity for sharing his excitement and enthusiasm for Mishnayot with his talmidim. Starting with a group of 25 boys to whom Rabbi Schreier sent out pre-recorded videos three times per week, word of the program spread quickly. With its subsequent launch in December as a live program, offered on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7 p.m., “Mishna Accomplished” now attracts over 100 boys. On Tuesday evening, February 23, more than 200 participants including proud rebbeim and glowing parents and grandparents joined the students from grades 3-6 who celebrated the initial siyum on Masechet Me ....
Gay Pride Most famously, there is Gay Pride Day, which is rooted in the Stonewall Inn Uprising when Trans and Gay patrons of the Stone Wall Inn decided to not be intimidated any longer by police brutality and literally fought back. Yet, the date is not kept precisely, celebrations are spread out all over the month of June which is dubbed Pride month. Many new to the issue ask what there is to be proud about when one’s fate invites others to hate and oppress you, and should there be Straight Pride Marches too? The best answers I know are that the Pride comes to confront shame. Not so many Straights are conditioned to feel ashamed about their sexual orientation. Generally, heterosexuality is encouraged all-year-round. ....
