Anybody to stand in the way of these children being able to thrive. thank you. you know, you just said something. from the day i took this job, people said we will never fix education until we fix poverty in america. have you it the right way. we won t fix poverty in america until we fix education. it s entirely doable. and, again this is the most important thing we see when we go to harlem and go into the charter schools. it s doable in a couple of years, instead of a couple generations if you do the sorts of things that you and mayor bloomberg are allowing charter schools to do. it s the entire system. create good schools, whether they are charter or public. i have opened up 350 public schools this weekend, we had a fair for those schools as well. give parents good options. don t get caught up in traditional politics. we have to get going. february 27th. ....

City. and we see it up in harlem. we go up to a charter school up in harlem. it s remarkable. these kids come in in fifth grated with first grade skills. by eighth grade, in the harlem village academy. it s a great school. by eighth grade there, is a 100% proficiency in math and science. that is a three-year revolution and not a 30-year revolution, and like you said, for the neediest of children, and i wonder who morally can say no to these kids. we have to figure out how to say yes. what are you saying is so important. for so long, people say these kids grow up in poverty and dysfunctional families, that was the excuse that personmeated education. we said we will educate them and can educate them. i ll show you public schools and public charter schools doing ....

Chance to get out? well, politics a rough and tumble game up there. we understand the dynamics of it. there are 35,000 kids on waiting lists for charter schools in the city. virtually all of those children live in high needs, high poverty community, and their parents are fighting for them to get the opportunity. i think this will turn and we ll be able to get it done. in the meantime, education there s a reason the education system works the way it does. a lot of defenders of the status quo. it often works well for adults. it doesn t work well for all of our kids, and one of the things that mayor bloomberg has done is that we ll create opportunities for every community. we brought more charter schools, opened up more charter schools than any other city. we hear all the time, chancellor, whether we re talking about climate change, this is going to be a long battle, take years and years, you look at what you and the mayor have done in new york ....

I know you don t want to demonize anybody. i m dead serious who is responsible for saying no to $700 million from new york schools? i think that came from the union s opposition to charter expansion. there was a bill that was going to be introduced. the governor introduced it. a solid bill that would have opened up the opportunity for $700 million. and the union came out the sunday before the vote and was quite clear that they were opposed to expansion of charters, except under circumstances that would have denied the expansion, and so i think, joe, it s politics as usual. do teachers unions, are they really so powerful they can intimidate lawmakers to say no to $700 million from barack obama, $700 million from the secretary of education, and i think most depressingly, to just say no to the poorest kids in new york state that want a ....
