City of Miami tries to take care of its own


Fearful that their limited supply of COVID-19 vaccines will be snatched up by outsiders, City of Miami officials are launching a “Miami First” effort that will restrict vaccinations to Miami residents only, starting with its elderly population.
On Jan. 15, the city announced that it had secured 3,500 doses of the Moderna vaccine. It also announced that City of Miami Fire Rescue (MFR) paramedics would be “setting up mobile distribution pods outside of select senior residential buildings and facilities located throughout the city’s five commission districts.” Those vaccinations started Tuesday, when The Miami Times found Miami Fire Rescue personnel were vaccinating senior citizens at Residential Plaza for the Elderly at Blue Lagoon just south of Miami International Airport in District 1. ....

In Broward County, all virus test collection sites will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year s Eve and New Year s Day. You can call the Broward County COVID-19 hotline at 954-357-9500 for more information.
The hotline is active from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, although it will be closed on Christmas and New Year s Day.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Although the coronavirus drive-thru testing center at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens has the capability of processing about 500 diagnostic tests per hour, there was a three-hour wait there on Monday morning.
According to Mike Jachels, a spokesman for the Florida Division of Emergency Management, by the end of the day, 3,879 tests had been conducted.
Jachels warned Christmas Day travelers who require the RT-PCR test and were submitting their samples on Monday were cutting it close. ....
