The three-day synchronised elephant census began in Coimbatore forest division with 100 volunteers participating. The census covers forest divisions across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, using block counting, transect method, and water hole count to assess elephant population.
The Mangaluru division of the forest department is planning to construct two additional elephant underpasses on the national highway stretch connecting Mangaluru and Bengaluru to mitigate man-elephant conflicts. The proposal aims to provide elephants with easy escape routes and reduce the impact of road widening and retaining walls on their movement through the corridor.
