from the leadership here. it wasn t going to happen. maybe a little closer to the u.s. would have been better. we wouldn t have terrified families in their vehicles trying to get out of here this morning. ainsley: steve, we were told by putin this is going to be a peace-keeping operation. he was going to go into the two independent regions. now he is going into kyiv. what does this tell you? what happens next? i think this is a war for control over the entire country of ukraine. when we re hearing ukrainian officials say this is an attempt to destroy a democratic country on the border with russia. i can t argue with that. that s what it looks like. but the hard thing to understand is that one man is calling the shots. are the russian people behind this? do the russian people wake up this morning and say oh, great, we are bombing my cousins, my relatives, my in-laws in ukraine. my guess is no. my guess there is some shame and

their freedoms, defend their homes. the footage of unarmed civilians, challenging armored columns, challenging people that are firing warning shots or firing into them is absolutely stunning. you cannot defeat a population like that. on the other hand, the russians were preparing for what amounted to a peace keeping operation, have an easy go of it, and within a couple of days, turn around and leave back home with a care taker force. that is not what they re facing, and that s what s shocking here. the russians haven t adapted to the fact that they re not going to make these quick gains. they shouldn t be feeding these large formations so deep behind enemy lines, they would pull back, consolidate and make slow steady advances with the supply lines. don t you think it speaks to vladimir putin and the russian military leadership not aptly preparing their soldiers. those that they re sending to
insisting the u.s. trade embargo is to blame for the country s economic problems. ashley: a republicans slam the biden administration for pulling troops out of afghanistan. i agree, it s a crushing defeat. the taliban have outlasted the will of the united states. it was not a hot war, really, it was basically a peace keeping operation. we may have to go back now. it s a crushing defeat. ashley: the final british troops returned home over the weekend but as the taliban gains ground, the pentagon is calling on the afghans to defend their country. we re certainly watching with deep concern which is why we are, again, working with our afghan partners to encourage them to use the capacity and the capability that we know they have and we know that they know how to he defend their country. this is a time for them to step up and to do exactly that. ashley: the taliban took control of vast amounts of territory last week, putting pressure on the afghan army and strongholds in the capital, ka
