the time. so it s nice to be here. so i m going to talk briefly about the book itself over all and then read two passages and then hopefully we will have some good discussion in answer questions. so two questions i ve been getting a lot lately are why this book, and why now. quite simply we can t afford to ignore chronic illness. an estimate of 133 million patients, as you desert, live with chronic illness. by 2025 that number is expected to reach 154 million. chronic illness is responsible for seven out of every 10 deaths, as well as three quarters of all health care spending. but it s so much more than that. so much more than statistics and economics. chronic illness is not something chronic illness is not something that happens to other people. the numbers tell us it will happen to most of us, or people that we love, and there is still underling assumptions and misconceptions about it that are problematic. for example, there is to this idea that people who are sick ....

[applause] [inaudible conversations]: : so i traveled the country for about 10 years, looking for people whose parents were slaves. we re not talking grandparents or great grandparents, but people whose mothers and fathers were born before 1865. i started the journey back in 1997 during the white house race panel, and president clinton had part of the initiative to discuss race relations, and he had initiative to figure out how to solve race problems, and the committee of historians and scholars traveled the country, trying to figure out how to solve race relations, and one topic that kept coming up, town hall meeting after town hall meeting, was slavery. one side felt that slavery happened so long ago that we need to move on as a country, and the other side felt that slavery did not happen long ago and that you can still feel the effects and that we should try and answer or solve the problems of slavery and the questions that still exist in the country in order to mo ....

[applause] but i have news for you be this time there s a difference. this time we re going to win. [applause] host: how did he prepare for his win in 1968? guest: well, it was a preparation that began many years before and i m not sure he was really aiming to be the president, but later on it became quite apparent that was the target. and he just felt that he had a mission to carry out and the most ....
