Mask enforcement still an issue, so are bike thefts, chief says

A Hermosa Beach Police Detective driving to work Monday spotted a man exhibiting suspicious behavior. The man was questioned and subsequently identified as a suspect in mail robberies, Hermosa Beach Police Chief Paul LeBaron said during a report to the Hermosa Beach City council Tuesday night.
“I want to emphasize Hermosa Beach is a safe city,” LeBaron noted as he began his update on recent criminal activity. “But We are not immune to crime any more than other Southern California cities.”
Presently, the chief said, “We are seeing increases in bicycle thefts, car break-ins, thefts of catalytic converters and mail packages.”

Fangary, who served seven years on the council is moving to Manhattan Beach.
Mayor Justin Massey said he wanted to appoint a new replacement member to serve out the remainder of Fangary’s term. He did not mention any name, but said he “wanted to appoint because it would be the cheapest way to do it.” He quickly agreed, however, to vote along with fellow council members, saying “I hear” their sentiment.
Cost of the mail-in election will be $30,000 to $50,000, officials said. By contrast, an in-person vote would cost about $100,000.
The election notion was endorsed by a parade of residents.

CrossFit Horsepower gym co-owner Jed Sanford has alleged Mayor Justin Massey and Council Member Stacey Armato voted illegally to appeal a recent judicial ruling. That ruling invalidated the council’s September 2018 designation of the CrossFit Horsepower gym as a “public nuisance.” The ruling led to the gym’s closing.
