Pride parade suggested to run alongside 'anti-trans' protest


There are a dozen speakers expected to address a protest held against child-medical transition which the City of Vancouver has labelled as “anti-trans.”
The Stand Up Speak Up! protest is being held today at the Vancouver Art Gallery from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Speakers at the protest include the controversial Chilliwack school board trustee Barry Neufeld, independent MP Derek Sloan and the current leader of the People s Party of Canada, Maxime Bernier.
While the protest is marketed as being “against child medical transition and gender identity ideology in schools,” last month the City of Vancouver felt it necessary to restate the city’s position on hate after learning about the protest. In the statement, the city calls the event an “anti-trans protest” but added city was powerless to stop such a gathering. ....

Free speech debate: Experts weigh pros and cons of intervening in anti-trans protest in Vancouver


 
VANCOUVER
An anti-trans protest scheduled this weekend in downtown Vancouver has reignited a debate pitting the protection of vulnerable youth against the right to free speech.
Vancouver social justice lawyer Adrienne Smith fears the April 10 event will include transphobic rhetoric that contributes to real-world harm, and believes police and city officials have the legal tools necessary to shut the protest down.
It s definitely a breach of public order to say hateful things that are likely to inflame others, Smith said. There s no middle ground with hateful comments.
But the City of Vancouver has said its hands are tied. Officials argue that intervening in the protest would be a violation of free speech rights, and a lawyer for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association agrees. ....

supply, demand economics. a number of refineries shut down for a various number of reasons. one of which is the heat. the record heat that has been sweeping was apparently too much for the power grid in southern california. the exxon mobile refinery shut down yesterday after the facility lost power. gasbuddy.com says the heat caused a transformer at a nearby substation to malfunction. combine that with the refinery in richmond, and you have yet another perfect storm for high gas prices. the wholesale cost shot up $1.06 in one week. by friday, retail prices could spike 30 cents. if it keeps up, station owners will have to sell it at $4.75 a gallon to break even. 12 miles to the gallon in the city. blaming high gas prices on the heat is farfetched. the gas companies find any reason they can. it s going to be the heat. just another excuse. reporter: and the gas experts say if california doesn t pick up production and crank out more gas soon, we could see, worse case ....
