After distributing more than 2.3 million AstraZeneca vaccine doses nationwide, public health officials have so far identified 28 suspected cases of a rare but serious condition called vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT). Dr. Howard Njoo, Canada s deputy chief public health officer, said Thursday that 18 of those cases have been verified through testing while 10 more await laboratory confirmation. VITT is blood clots combined with low levels of blood platelets following immunization.

Counting is expected to be completed on Saturday. As Scots contemplate becoming an independent country again  just seven years after deciding against it in a 2014 referendum  Quebec seems further away from independence than it has been for decades. Due to complications related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the complete results of the election held in Scotland on Thursday won t be known until this weekend. (Votes were also held to elect members to the Welsh assembly and to councils across England.)

With the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic raging on, the demand for vaccine doses continues to outstrip Canada s relatively thin supply. Canada s domestic vaccine manufacturing capability has been hollowed out, leaving the country entirely dependent on foreign sources for the doses that promise an eventual return to normal life. When the pandemic began, Canada unlike many other countries lacked a facility that could be retooled easily to produce the viral vector COVID-19 vaccines from AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson, or the mRNA products offered by Pfizer and Moderna.
