Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu established herself in the Romanian interwar literature as one of the first and most important voices of the revived Romanian novel. The fact that this new path was opened by a woman, singled her out among other writers of that time, who were quite numerous and equally talented. That explains why, for a long time, in textbooks and even in the public conscience, Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu seemed to be the only interwar writer worthy of being preserved in cultural memory. Nothing was further from the truth however, given that Hortensia had shared, until her debut, the common fate of women of her time. Born in 1876 to a wealthy family that had also given other writers, she married magistrate Nicolae Papadat when she was only 20. She had to follow him from one city to another, anywhere his profession called him. After the marriage, Hortensia gave birth to five children, the future author dedicating many years entirely to her household and family.
Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu compelled recognition in Romanian inter-war literature as one of the first and the most important voices in the renewal of the Romanian novel. As for the fact that, in terms of a writer s craft, the new way was paved by a woman writer, that particular fact earned Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu a privileged position among her fellow women writers, while her work was entered into the literary canon, despite the fact that, in her time, women writers were quite a few and their work had already compelled recognition in Romanian literature. Which explains that, for many years, in the textbooks and even in the collective mindset, Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu seemed to have been the only inter-war woman writer worthy of a place in the literary memory. But that is utterly false, all the more so as, up until the moment of her debut, Hortensia also shared the usual fate of the women of her time. Born in 1876, into a well-to-do f ....
Writer Marin Sorescu was born in February 1936 in the village of Bulzești, in Dolj County, in southern Romania. A poet, playwright, prose writer and literary critic, Marin Sorescu was one of the best-known and popular Romanian writers from the communist period, both in Romania and abroad. After his death in 1996, aged 60, his work, however, fell somewhat out of fashion. Literary historian Paul Cernat tells us more:
"Marin Sorescu hailed from Oltenia, a region that features in many ways in his works, especially in his cycle of poems entitled At Lilieci, which is one of his masterpieces. Sorescu went to high school in Craiova and then the military school in Predeal, an experience that left a deep impression on him and which he wrote about in a series of poems that were published after his death. He studied at the Faculty of Philology in the late 1950s and graduated in 1960. Soon afterwards he made his debut as a poet in the early days of the post-Stalinist ....
Prose writer Radu Tudoran is the author of the most popular and the most widely-read adventure novel in Romanian literature, All Sails Up !, Toate panzele sus!, in Romanian. Radu Tudoran was born almost 112 years ago, on March 8th, 1910, in the locality of Blejoi, Prahova County.
All Sails Up! enjoyed a tremendous success; it was even turned into a TV series in the 1970s and, because of its popularity, critics and readership alike ignored the rest of his literary output, despite Radu Tudoran's being a very prolific writer. Moreover, in terms of personal life, Radu Tudoran kept himself to himself and succeeded to stay away from the propagandistic tendencies of the communist-controlled literature, back in the day. So Radu Tudoran's apparently unassuming personal life comes in stark contrast with the fame acquired by All Sails Up!. The novel is deprived of any ideological reference; surprisingly enough, it was published at a time when ....
