Palm Springs area: Memorial Day weekend events in the Coachella Valley

Every year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3699 hosts the Patriotic Art Contest. For this year s competition, the VFW Post 3699 received artwork submissions from 20 high school students in the Coachella Valley.
The high school students that were selected will have their artwork honoring the military displayed for the public at the Palm Springs Air Museum and the General Patton Memorial Museum over the Memorial Day weekend. 
Winners of the competition are Jennifer DeLeon and Graciela Tijerina-Cruz; across the country, VFW Auxiliary Scholarship offers 10 national awards for a total of $31,500. The national first-place winner receives a $15,000 scholarship. The second-place winner receives $7,500 and the third-place winner receives a $3,500 scholarship award. Fourth place receives $1,500 and those placing sixth and below receive awards of $500.  ....

Liberating Pilsen was a great "honour and a privilege", recalls 99-year-old US Army veteran

“My name is Robert Muthersbaugh. I was with the 16th Armoured division. I was the chief radio operator, so my vehicle was one of the first ones into Pilsen - we came in a halftrack. And it was an honour and a privilege to free the Czech people…”
Mr Muthersbaugh was 23 years old at the time and celebrates his 100th birthday in October. But he vividly recalls the warm welcome the soldiers of General George Patton’s Third Army received, an experience he treasures.
“I was amazed at how wonderful all the people were, how happy they were to see us. They were kissing us and hugging us. And they wanted to bring us beer, take our pictures. It was really wonderful. ....
