New restrictions threaten some U.S. food shipments to commissaries, exchanges in Europe

New restrictions threaten some US food shipments to commissaries, exchanges in Europe
February 26
New European Union restrictions could hinder some products from reaching the shelves at European exchanges and commissisaries, like this one in Ramstein, Germany. (Defense Commissary Agency)
Military families in Europe may see shortages of items ranging from baby formula to pet food on their military stores’ shelves due to newly enforced European Union restrictions on food imports to military bases.
Commissary and exchange officials say they are monitoring shipments. There have been no impacts on shelves yet, and the distribution centers in Europe keep a 30- to 45-day supply of these items to support their stores. The issue, which just arose in the past week, is caused by newly enforced restrictions imposed by the European Union, industry sources said. ....

Pentagon's award of a big contract rekindled debate about a Virginia company's 'small business' status

By AARON GREGG | The Washington Post | Published: February 18, 2021
WASHINGTON In early January, the Pentagon gave six businesses a massive, open-ended opportunity to supply the U.S. war effort.
The Tailored Logistics Support program, known as TLS, exists so military agencies can buy large quantities of items such as weapons accessories, clothing, and diving equipment, relying on a handful of re-sellers to connect the government with specialized manufacturers. Without knowing how long America s foreign wars might last, or how much it might cost to keep equipping deployed service members, the Defense Department came up with a generous contract when sizing up the next phase of the program: Up to $33 billion over five two-year increments. ....

More flu vaccine arrives in Europe for Americans still waiting for a jab

By JENNIFER H. SVAN | STARS AND STRIPES Published: January 7, 2021
KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany A bulk shipment of flu vaccine for Department of Defense personnel and family members has arrived in Europe and is being distributed to base medical clinics that still need the shot, U.S. health and military officials in Germany said this week.
The U.S. military in Europe received about 56,000 doses of the vaccine this week, which “should be more than enough for everyone we still need to vaccinate,” said Gino Mattorano, spokesman for Regional Health Command Europe.
Roughly 70,000 service members and Defense Department employees, many with dependents, live on the Continent, where flu season typically begins in October. A limited supply of flu shots was available earlier in the season, but service members were given priority for jabs then, and many Americans affiliated with the military in Europe were not vaccinated. ....
