8,000 People Cross From Democratic Republic of Congo Into Rwanda Following Volcano Eruption MT. NYIRAGONGO, Democratic Republic of Congo. Hundreds of children are feared missing or were separated from their families after Mount Nyiragongo erupted in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday. The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said Sunday that the children were lost amid chaos as residents fled the nearby city of Goma. More than 150 children have been separated from their families and more than 170 children are feared to be missing, the agency said. Around 8,000 people crossed into Rwanda from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to seek refuge following the eruption of the volcano, Rwanda’s Emergency Management Ministry said Sunday. ....

The eruption of the Mount Nyiragongo volcano in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo seems to have subsided late Saturday, according to the Goma Volcano Observatory, which monitors the volcano. Still, authorities have activated an evacuation plan for the nearby city of Goma. The volcano s last major eruption in 2002 killed 250 people and displaced thousands. Volcanologist Honore Chiraba from the Goma Volcano Observatory told CNN there are two fractures in the volcano. Chiraba is following the volcanic activity closely with the governor of North Kivu, the province where the city of Goma is located. He said even though the volcanic activity seems to have subsided late Saturday, officials will evacuate Goma as a precaution. ....
