Hundreds of people gathered outside Furness General Hospital to pay their respects to a ‘gentleman’ doctor before his funeral. Current staff members, ex-colleagues and members of the public paid an emotional tribute and clapped for long-serving rheumatoid specialist Dr William Smith Mitchell, who dedicated more than 30 years to the hospital before he sadly died of pulmonary fibrosis. George Nasmyth, a consultant surgeon who started working with Mr Mitchell in 1991, said: “He was the one who brought the attention to the legionella outbreak and this was the most important thing because until you recognise it more and more people were getting it, and that was down to him. ....
