KILLEEN, Texas As the city of Killeen continues to grow so does the need for new schools for new students moving into the area.
The sight of construction workers and homes popping up in new neighborhoods is a sign that the city of Killeen is growing.
“With the influx of people coming into the district and moving into an area that is family oriented and affordable, we have to have more schools to make sure we accommodate the students coming with those families. We have to make sure they have a great education,” Iris Felder, Executive Director of KISD Elementary Schools, said.
Saegert Elementary Assistant Principal Becky Whitelow will become the newest principal of Brookhaven Elementary this fall.
âHer natural ability to lead is easily recognized by all who come in contact with her,â the district said of Whitelow in a press release.
Whitelow, a military combat veteran, began her KISD career as a first-grade teacher at Sugar Loaf Elementary. Whitelow will replace outgoing principal Iris Felder who was recently promoted to KISD executive director of elementary schools.
Cedar Valley Elementary Assistant Principal Jessica Napolez will become the schoolâs newest principal for the 2021-2022 school year.
Napolez began her KISD career teaching at Iduma and Hay Branch elementary schools.
For many, perhaps everyone, 2020 will go down as a year theyâd rather forget. However, the huge news that came in 2020 is unforgettable.
By March, the coronavirus had swept into the world, the nation and Central Texas, drastically changing the way people work, shop, eat and live. It ushered in changes to the Killeen-Fort Hood area that will likely leave lasting impacts to the local landscape. It impacted everyone.
A month later, on April 22, a Fort Hood soldier went missing. Frantic searches, protests, blame and a national spotlight on Fort Hood followed. Eventually it was discovered that Spc. Vanessa Guillen had been reportedly killed by a fellow soldier. Her body was found more than two months later near the Leon River south of Temple.
