BENGALURU: Syed Naseer Hussain, a Congress Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka, performed the last rites of a Brahmin professor who died due to Covid-19 on May 5. On Tuesday, he immersed the professor’s ashes at Paschima Vahini near Srirangapatna.
Prof Savitri Vishwanathan, 80, a researcher of Japanese language, history and politics, was former head of the department of Chinese and Japanese Studies in Delhi University. With Savitri’s younger sister Mahalakshmi Atreyi battling for life in another hospital, Syed performed the rituals the same day. She had moved to Bengaluru after retirement. ....

Karnataka on Thursday reported a dip in fresh infections, logging 28,869 cases, but saw a rise in deaths which touched 548. This is the fifth time that the state is reporting over 500 deaths in a day and all these have been during this month. Bengaluru reported 9,409 cases during the day and 289 deaths. Health minister K Sudhakar on Thursday said the state will resume vaccination drive for the 18-44 age group from May 22. The state had suspended the drive for this category from May 14. There has been a sharp jump in the number of children and adolescents in Karnataka testing positive for Covid-19 in the second wave of infections. The number of children aged 0-9 years testing positive in the past two months is 143% of the total infections reported till March 18 this ....

Karnataka Budget: Treated water from Vrushabhavathi Valley to fill 234 tanks

The State Budget has proposed to take up a project to fill 234 tanks in Bengaluru city, Bengaluru Rural, Tumakuru, and Chickballapur districts with processed waste water from Vrushabhavathi Valley
of Bengaluru.
The project, estimated to cost ₹500 crore, will process 308 million litres of water a day to the second stage. Interestingly, Ramanagaram does not figure in the proposed project though Vrushabhavathi Valley is closer to Ramanagaram.
It is also stated that the construction of a balancing reservoir near Navali, of Koppal district, to replenish the deficit in the storage of water (owing to silt filling up the Tungabhadra reservoir) would be taken up at the earliest, after consulting with the neighbouring States of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and taking the necessary concurrence. ....

Kadaba: Drinking water project - Work on vented dam begins

Kadaba, Jan 2: Work on a vented dam being built across River Kumaradhara near Shantimogaru for the multi-village drinking water project has resumed. The dam is meant to supply drinking water to Kudmar, Savanur, Belandur, Kaniyoor, Punchappady, Alankaru, Perabe and Nanthoor villages.
The project is expected to be completed by May 2021. MLA S Angara has provided a grant of Rs 7.5 crore for the project through minor irrigation department. The work has been undertaken under the Paschima Vahini scheme. The dam also will enrich the underground water table for a radius of three km around the dam. The dam will be 4 metres in height, 221 meters long and three meters wide. It will have 56 sluice gates. ....
