The period of Lent this year merges with the beginning of the month of Ramzan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims believe that the Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed in this month. During Ramzan, followers abstain from food and water from dawn to dusk. Fasting is a key pillar of Islam. Judaism also prescribes fasting.
