Cannabis use among teens lower than EU average, study finds

Cannnabis use among 15- and 16-year-olds in Malta is lower than the European average, even though a higher-than-average share say it is easy to obtain, a recent study has indicated.  This data emerged from a study conducted by the Faculty of Social Wellbeing within the University of Malta, and puts together the latest research covering alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs and other prescription drugs, along with the perception of young people towards substance use.  The study was commissioned by the Save a Life Foundation, which was established by Nationalist Party MP Claudio Grech.  Titled ‘Substance use in adolescents and emerging adulthood’, the study found that 16 per cent of youths aged 15-16 in Malta use cannabis - a figure four percentage points lower than the EU average.

Minister scraps predecessor s Air Malta state aid plan

Newsbook Miguela Xuereb Finance Minister Clyde Caruana confirmed that he sent the state aid plan for Air Malta drawn up under Economy Minister Silvio Schembri back to the drawing board, with the original plan apparently deemed unsatisfactory by the European Commission. Caruana was addressing a query made during question time on Tuesday by Nationalist Party MP Claudio Grech, a day after he said that he was hoping to present a state aid plan for the Commission’s approval by the end of March. But Grech highlighted that last October, Schembri – then the minister responsible for the national airline – had announced that the government would be seeking approval for a “substantial” state aid plan within days, and that international experts would be brought in to assist. The MP thus asked Caruana to explain what has happened since.

PN approves 70 election candidates

With almost 70 general election candidates already approved and more in the pipeline, the Nationalist Party’s renewal process is moving at a very fast pace, according to general secretary Francis Zammit Dimech. “We are gearing the party for the forthcoming general election where we will be presenting a refreshed image of the party, giving the electorate a wider choice and a healthy mix of people to choose from,” he said. The party’s executive committee has been steadily approving general election candidates for months. Apart from the sitting MPs, who have an automatic right to contest the next general election, the committee has approved a list of around 40 individuals, half of whom will be contesting the election for the first time. The list includes people serving as local councillors and others who are entering the political arena for the first time.
