Greater Houston area could see economic relief from pandemic around mid-2021, economist says


Although the price for a barrel of oil returned to $50.43 in January, Jankowski said the energy industry is unlikely to fill positions that were lost in the layoffs.
“The damage has already been done; we ve already seen so many layoffs in the oil and gas industry,” Jankowski said. “We re not going to see a significant uptick in hiring. If there s demand for more oil, the industry is going to handle it just by taking their existing workforce and giving them overtime or pushing a little bit harder.”
Comparatively, several white-collar sectors have recovered completely from the pandemic, including finance and insurance; utilities; and professional, scientific and technical services, Jankowski said. However, data for Harris County showed nail salons, barbershops, mechanics, hotels, and the arts, entertainment and recreation industry have not yet reached 50% recovery from the pandemic. ....

Norman Funderburk of Humble has announced his candidacy for the position of mayor of the City of Humble in the election set for May 1, 2021. 
 “I believe that my track record of service in the community speaks to the level of pride, dedication and commitment that I have for the city I love and for its citizens.  I have a servant’s heart and want to have a positive impact and make a difference for our community,” Funderburk said in launching his campaign.
Funderburk was first elected to Humble City Council in 2014, re-elected in 2016, 2018 and 2020, and was serving in his fourth term at the time he stepped down to run for mayor.  ....

Humble BBQ Cook-Off, Rodeo kicks off next week without carnival

Humble BizCom was held virtually on Jan. 21, opening as this year’s first such event for Partnership Lake Houston.
Jerri Monbaron, Humble ISD Community Development Director, discussed the upcoming Humble Rodeo and BBQ Cook-Off that begins Jan. 28. While the carnival will not be able to make it to town this year due to COVID-19 related company budget cuts as a small business operation, the BBQ Cook-Off and Rodeo are still moving ahead.
They are working with the city of Humble and Harris County to follow the governor’s orders and local health recommendations, according to Monbaron, so guests will be asked to wear masks on shuttle buses and the cook-off tents as well as to get into the rodeo. Sanitizing stations will also be available throughout the facilities. ....
