Three Kashmir DDC’s To Be Headed By Women Hussain SRINAGAR: Three districts in Kashmir valley are slated to have women as chairpersons of the recently elected District Development Councils while in Jammu division the number is also three but one is reserved for a woman of the Scheduled Tribe community. As per a notification issued by State Election Commission, north Kashmir’s Baramulla, central Kashmir’s Ganderbal, and south Kashmir’s restive Shopian districts will be headed by a woman chairperson. The notification further states that in south Kashmir’s Anantnag, the DDC chairperson would be a member of the Scheduled Tribe while in Jammu the districts of Poonch and Rajouri have been reserved for the Scheduled Tribe category candidates. The Poonch district seat is further reserved for a women candidate of the Scheduled Tribe category. ....
Kashmir Vindicates Its Secular Tradition, Elects 3 Sikhs To DDC Yawar Hussain SRINAGAR: In a first, three Sikh candidates won from three remote areas of Kashmir in the District Development Council (DDC) elections. While two of them won from the Tral (Pulwama), another candidate is a 30-year-old woman posted her victory from Dangiwacha (Rafiabad) in north Kashmir. Parmeet Kour Parmeet Kour contesting on a Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference (JKPC) ticket from Rafiabad DDC segment defeated Tasleem Akhter of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party by 96 votes. Rafiabad is the ancestral belt of JKAP founder. While Kour polled 1412, her opponent Akhtar could only manage 1316 votes. The constituency was reserved for women in the district. ....
Dr Harbaksh Singh, Parmeet Kour and Chaman Lal were all fighting against Muslim candidates in predominantly Muslim constituencies but their religion did not come in the way of their victory. Kour and Singh, both Sikhs, have won the District Development Council elections from Tral and Rafiabad constituencies in Pulwama and Baramulla districts, respectively, while Lal, a Kashmir Pandit, has become the sarpanch of Shopian’s Zainpora. “I got 1,452 votes out of 3,900 (votes polled) and my rival, who is a Muslim candidate from the Congress, got 986 votes. It is mostly the Muslims, over 1,300, who voted for me and the rest were from my community,” Singh, who is from the People’s Democratic Party, told ....
