Wynne Lee, a Menlo Park 14-year-old who was reported missing on Jan. 11, was found by Detective Barker of the San Mateo County Sheriff s Office, according to a Jan. 18 announcement on Twitter from the Sheriff s Office.
Former Menlo Park City Council member Kirsten Keith announced the evening of Jan. 20 that she planned to step down from her seat on the board of the Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency.
During the council s reorganization meeting on Dec. 15, when council members pick which boards and committees they plan to represent, council members said they favored asking Keith to resign and instead placing a current council member in the seat. They agreed to ask Keith to resign, and place councilman Ray Mueller in the seat with Vice Mayor Betsy Nash as the alternate. They also asked that whoever take the seat commit to step down whenever he or she is no longer on the City Council. Mueller agreed to those terms. ....

Firefighters make strides against wildland fires [Santa Cruz Sentinel, Calif.]
Jan. 23 SANTA CRUZ As rain showers fell, firefighters continued to make more headway on containing the remaining fires in Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties.
“Last night simmered everything down, we’re pulling the last of the hose team off the fires earlier today…the rain we got last night pretty much put everything out,” Cal Fire San Mateo Santa Cruz CZU Unit Chief Rich Sampson said Friday.
“Now it’s pretty much in monitor mode,” Sampson said.
The Freedom Fire, which ignited in the Aptos Hills and triggered evacuations for 100 households earlier in the week, stood at 37 acres and 85% contained as of Thursday afternoon. ....

Jan. 20 LATEST Jan. 20, 10:45 a.m. Cal Fire said it hopes to have seven small wildfires burning in northern Santa Cruz and southern San Mateo counties contained by the end of the day Wednesday amid favorable weather conditions.
“That’s contained, not controlled,” Cal Fire spokesperson Cecile Juliette said. “We hope to have all of them controlled by this weekend. Contained is when they’re able to get a fire line around the entire fire, so they can keep it within a certain area. Controlled is when they have the line around the fire and all the hot spots within the perimeter are out.” ....

Jan. 21 SANTA CRUZ Winds that likely ignited at least 20 fires across Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties have died down, and firefighters seized the opportunity Wednesday, making progress on containing the blazes into the evening.
The two major fires are the Freedom Fire, north of Watsonville in the Aptos Hills, and the Panther Ridge Fire in Boulder Creek. Those two blazes triggered evacuation orders for at least 120 households. All residents placed under those orders were allowed to repopulate as of Wednesday afternoon.
Cal Fire CZU San Mateo Santa Cruz Unit Chief Ian Larkin said though many of the fires across Santa Cruz and San Manteo counties are nearing containment, that crews were still on the attack. ....
