April 21, 2021 James Kon The ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) officially handed over 25 housing units ( Hunian Tetap – Huntap) and a mosque to Palu City, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia in a ceremony held via video conference recently. The contribution under Phase II of the ASEAN Village project was made possible courtesy of the people of Brunei Darussalam. Under Phase I, 75 Huntap units were handed over on April 16, 2020; 31 of which were funded by Brunei Darussalam. This brings the Sultanate’s total contribution to 56 Huntap units and a 200-capacity mosque. The Brunei community’s eagerness to donate to the project demonstrates concern and a sense of solidarity with the Central Sulawesi populace displaced by the 2018 earthquake and tsunami. ....

On 28 September 2018, three earthquakes struck Sulawesi, Indonesia. This was followed by a devastating five-meter-high tide of tsunami which hit the coastal areas of Palu and Dongola districts. The earthquake caused the ground to weaken due to a process called liquefaction, which caused homes, schools, hospitals and offices to collapse. Over 2,000 people lost their lives, over 4,600 were severely injured and over 1,000 people went missing. Over 223,000 people lost their homes and had to live in temporary shelters. ....

Forty seven residents died in Mamaju District, and nine others died in Majene District owing to the strong earthquake, the agency s spokesperson, Raditya Jati, said in a statement that ANTARA received here Sunday. ....
