WHS student wins scholarship in essay contest; 11 high school students across county awarded Daily Light report On Sunday, April 25, the Rebecca Boyce Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its annual Good Citizen Patriots’ Tea at the First Baptist Church in Waxahachie. Regent Vicki Williams welcomed the 75 members, guests and honorees in attendance. Each high school in Ellis County was invited to choose their Good Citizen. This student exemplifies leadership, dependability, service and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities. Teachers and peers select the students because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree. Once a student is chosen as the DAR Good Citizen from their school, they are invited to participate in the scholarship portion of the program. This consists of a personal statement and an essay about our American heritage and the responsibility of preserving it for future generations. A $1,000 scholarship ....
Fifteen-year-old Aimee Wright was sitting in her last class on Thursday when she heard Coronado High School was switching back from in-person learning to remote instruction on Friday. “We were just about to put on a play and did the opening and closing night yesterday, but we can’t perform tonight or tomorrow,” she said Friday at a protest in front of Colorado Springs School District 11’s administration building. “At first I was angry, and now I’m just sad,” she said. “I don’t think any of this is for our safety. There doesn’t seem to be any reason.” ....

PALMER - The Newhalen Malamutes outshined the Northern Lights on Saturday. They dominated all aspects of the game to claim a 63-33 victory over the Shishmaref Northern Lights in the Class 1A girls state championship game Saturday at Palmer High School. Led by junior Johnna Nanalook, who accounted for nearly half of her team s points with a game-high 31 points, Newhalen captured its fourth girls title in school history and its first since 2014. The past few years we haven t had a team that has been able to come this far so I bet the community is pretty proud, Nanalook said. It s a huge basketball village, everybody plays basketball. ....
