U.S. airlifts relief supplies to help the people of Palau affected by Typhoon Surigae Format press@usaid.gov The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is airlifting plastic sheeting for shelter needs, kitchen sets, and other relief supplies - to save lives and meet the urgent needs of the Palau people in response to Typhoon Surigae. Arriving in Palau from USAID s warehouse in Miami, this airlift will support emergency response efforts for more than 3,000 people, with more on the way. This shipment of relief supplies totals approximately $56,000, and comes at a critical moment as some communities remain without access to electricity, safe drinking water, and sanitation services. Relief supplies will be provided to partner International Organization for Migration for immediate distribution.

WFP’s Pacific Humanitarian Air Service and the Red Cross join forces to deliver relief to typhoon-devastated Palau Format AIRAI, Palau – Relief aid is arriving in Palau after Typhoon Surigae left a trail of destruction across the tiny island state of Palau, damaging some 1500 homes, destroying roads, and cutting off water and power supplies. To transport vital relief supplies from stockpiles in Kuala Lumpur to remote affected communities, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have joined forces. The collaboration includes IFRC relief supplies, along with 400 family kits donated by the Government of Australia brought in from WFP-managed UN Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, using the Pacific Humanitarian Air Service also managed by WFP. USAID offered humanitarian assistance worth US$ 100,000 towards IFRC relief supplies.

The National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) and the Palau Red Cross Society are currently conducting assessments. Over the weekend, Typhoon Surigae passed near the eastern seaboard of the Philippines and rapidly intensified from Category 2 to Category 5 in less than 36 hours. Local officials preemptively evacuated about 68,400 residents in the provinces of Catanduanes and Albay, both of which were heavily affected by Super Typhoon Goni in October 2020. Typhoon Surigae was last estimated at 475 km east of Infanta, Quezon with maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h and gustiness of up to 215 km/h. Surigae is not expected to make landfall as it continues to move northward,
