COVID-19 has focused our attention on the plight of students struggling to go to school on the internet. It s been worse in rural Alaska, where kids have huddled outside closed schools, trying to pick up a Wi-Fi signal to complete their homework assignments. And their parents depend on the internet, too. Like urban folks, they use it to order groceries, clothing and medications. They use it to attend Zoom meetings and, of course, to watch television and movies - needed entertainment on a stormy winter night. Like their city friends, rural residents need high-speed internet service. It s called broadband. ....

OneWeb aims to capitalize on telco, government connections

OneWeb CEO Neil Masterson expressed confidence its ability to tap the expertise of a high-profile group of investors would give it a leg up in an increasingly competitive satellite market, smoothing the company’s path as it pursues commercial deals with operators and governments.
Since July 2020, OneWeb raised a total of $1.4 billion from the UK government, India’s Bharti Global, Japan’s SoftBank Group and satellite service provider Hughes Network Systems.
Speaking at the Satellite 2021 LEO Digital Forum, Masterson said all four of these investors provide access to “global capabilities that are really helpful” as it targets gains in the enterprise, government, maritime and aviation markets. ....

It was an on again-off again start to the year but ultimately on for a deal that promises to bring multiple layers of broadband coverage to Alaska.
Alaska telecommunications provider Microcom and London-based OneWeb announced an agreement Jan. 15 that would make the Anchorage-based company the Alaska distributor of space on OneWeb’s global broadband network that is currently in-the-works.
Microcom leaders said OneWeb’s broadband network utilizing nearly 700 low-earth orbit satellites would complement the company’s own Aurora broadband network currently in development.
The onset of the pandemic did not stop the work by Microcom subsidiary Pacific Dataport Inc. on the fully financed Aurora broadband project but it did push OneWeb into bankruptcy. ....
