88-year-old dies hours after vaccine; doctors stress he was seriously ill

An 88-year-old man died at a Jerusalem hospital Tuesday, hours after receiving the coronavirus vaccine, with doctors stressing in a statement that the patient had serious preexisting health problems.
The man had received the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine during the afternoon as part of Israel’s mass inoculation program. He later collapsed at home.
Paramedics called to the scene worked to resuscitate him as they rushed him to Hadassah Mount Scopus Medical Center where doctors later pronounced his death. Discouraging any link between the shot and the death, the hospital said the man suffered from “chronic, complex and difficult” health conditions, without specifying. ....

Nearly 100,000 vaccinated Sunday as Health Ministry expands inoculation drive

The Health Ministry on Monday announced a new daily record in coronavirus vaccination numbers, with 98,916 shots administered the previous day, a week after Israel began its inoculation campaign. The total number of inoculations in the country stood at 379,000.
In a statement, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein praised the various authorities and care providers for their work in quickly administering the vaccine, as well as the public for its enthusiasm in receiving it.
“We’ll continue in this manner, and we’ll increase the pace even further,” he said. ....

Israel nears 500,000 vaccinated, in new daily record; teachers to be prioritized

Israel is closing in on half a million vaccinated, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said Monday night, as it continues to accelerate the rate at which it is inoculating citizens against COVID-19. Health Ministry figures Tuesday morning confirmed this, putting the number vaccinated at 495,000 more than 1 in 20 Israelis.
Israel began its vaccination drive on December 20, focusing on healthcare workers, over 60s, and at-risk groups, and is leading the world in vaccinations per capita. A record 99,000 people were vaccinated on Sunday, bringing the national total to 379,000, and Edelstein indicated that a new record of over 100,000 were given shots on Monday. ....

Netanyahu claims pandemic will likely be over in Israel 'within a few weeks'


Netanyahu said he hopes up to 100,000 Israelis will be vaccinated every day by next weekend.
Sixty-five thousand Israelis were vaccinated on Wednesday, and the Health Ministry is aiming by next week to be vaccinating 100,000 Israelis per day.
Israel is currently second in the world in vaccinations per capita, according to the University of Oxford-run Our World in Data.
Israel began administering shots to medical staff on Sunday and to Israelis over 60 years old from Monday. As of Thursday evening, 180,000 Israelis had received the first dose. Hospitals are set to join the effort next week, ramping up the campaign, with the prime minister and health officials saying Israel aspired to become the first country in the world to achieve herd immunity against COVID-19. ....
