How Black Owned Toronto went from an Instagram page to a storefront

It started with an Instagram page and a goal to support more Black-owned businesses.
One year later, hundreds of products from dozens of Black owned businesses can be found under one roof.
Black Owned Toronto now has its own storefront at Scarborough Town Centre.

Black Owned Toronto has gone from a popular Instagram account to online directory, business hub and soon a physical store in Scarborough

Kerin John turned the Instagram account Black Owned TO into searchable online directory.
When Kerin John started an Instagram account to highlight local Toronto Black-owned businesses in May of last year, she had no idea how quickly the idea would take off.
Soon after, the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd reignited a global Black Lives Matter protest movement. As resources circulated online, people started to trade and circulate lists of Black-owned businesses. And John’s weeks-old Black Owned Toronto (@blackowned.to) account exploded with new followers and submissions. ....

Khan and McCalla are the founders of AirMatrix, which builds the 3D network of drone roads with industry-leading millimetre precision.
Khan is a technology entrepreneur and is part of the Transport Canada working group on UTM, the RPAS Traffic Management Action Team (RTMAT), as well as Canada’s mirror committee on drone standards for the International Standards Organization. He is also a member of NASA’s working group on transformational vertical flight, specifically for public services.
McCalla is an expert in business transformation for technology. She has also worked at numerous scaling tech start-ups in Toronto and Silicon Valley, and has experience in strategy, product management, operations, and client services/sales. ....
