PHOTO | NMG By SAM KIPLAGAT The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has shortlisted 10 people, among them five judges, for the position of Chief Justice to replace Mr David Maraga who retired in January. In an announcement, the JSC dropped three applicants from the list of 13 people who had applied for the position at the deadline on February 9. The 10 candidates who were shortlisted after their documents were scrutinised include President of the Court of Appeal William Ouko, Court of Appeal Judge Martha Koome, High Court Judge Said Chitembwe and Employment and Labour Relations Judges Mathews Nduma Nderi and Njagi Marete. ....

In an advert in local dailies yesterday, the commission said only the 10 candidates met the threshold required for appointment as CJ while nine other candidates who applied for position of Supreme Court Judge to replace retired Justice Jacktom Ojwang were all shortlisted for interviews. “Having reviewed the applications for completeness and conformity with the requirements as set out in the Constitution, the JSC shortlisted 10 candidates for the post of CJ and all the nine candidates for the post of Supreme Court Judge,” it said. ....

The commission embarked on the process as people wondered why top lawyers, legal scholars and senior judges failed to apply for the top judicial job. It was widely thought that the current Supreme Court judges would top the list of those seeking the CJ’s position, but none of the five judges applied including DCJ Philomena Mwilu who has been acting as the CJ since Justice David Maraga’s retirement in January. ....

A total of 13 top lawyers, legal scholars and judges will battle for the post of Chief Justice recently vacated by David Maraga, who retired last month. The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) disclosed the names of the applicants after close of the 21 days application period and said they will immediately start the process of verifying the applications to ensure they meet qualifications before shortlisting candidates for interviews. “The commission will proceed to shortlist and publicize the list within 14 days as provided in the Judicial Service Act.
