Act fast to save Otley's swimming pool - appeal

AN OTLEY councillor is calling on Otley residents to act fast to save the town’s swimming pool.
Chippindale Pool has been earmarked for closure under wider cost-cutting plans by Leeds City Council as it tries to balance its budget, and plug a multi-million pound gap, for the year ahead.
Although not owned by the council the pool, which is based at Prince Henry’s Grammar School, is supported by the local authority. The council says that ending that arrangement would save it £37,000 in 2020-21, plus a further £50,000 in ‘other service areas’.
The school and local politicians, however, have branded the proposal - part of a package of cost-cutting measures that also includes plans to close Leeds Sailing & Activity Centre, at Yeadon - as devastating. ....

Town waiting to hear new owner's plans for Civic Centre building

The price paid is considerably more than the reserve, which is good news.
I hope Leeds honours previous commitments and releases some of the money from the sale back to the local community.
A spokesperson for campaign group Otley Civic Hub Support said: We look forward to seeing who the new owners are and hearing about what they have planned for the Civic Centre.
Our focus will continue to be on getting a new community hub created in Otley to compensate for the loss of this important community asset.
We will be asking the community to support us in a future-focussed campaign once we have drawn up a case. ....

'Greener' street lights for Otley and Yeadon - LED upgrade to begin in early 2021

WORK to fit more efficient LED street lights across Otley and Yeadon is to begin early in the new year.
Leeds City Council’s four year LED conversion programme began - in the Rothwell and Chapel Allerton areas - in October, 2019 and is now being rolled out ward by ward. The scheme has been split into two phases with the first stage involving the upgrading of street lights on main traffic routes along with the conversion of some older lights on residential streets.
The council has confirmed that phase one works in the Otley and Yeadon ward are due to start on Monday, January 11, 2021 with the authority’s operating sub-contractor, SSE Enterprise, set to complete them within about three weeks. ....

Hopes for Otley Civic Centre's restoration after £600,000 sale

OTLEY is waiting to hear what is planned for the Civic Centre after the building sold for £600,000.
Owners Leeds City Council had put the Grade II Listed property on the market as part of its efforts to plug a multi-million pound budget deficit for next year.
It was sold via a 24 hour online auction, where the building was listed with a guide price of just £135,000, which ended on December 9.
Once the town s major community hub and a home to the Town Council and other groups, including Otley Museum, the Civic Centre has been closed since 2010.
Debate has raged ever since about what should happen to the property - which is owned by the city council and in need of substantial restoration - and there have been attempts to have it reopened as an entertainment hub. ....
