Winona Area Public Schools’ (WAPS) Diversity and Equity Committee (DEC) is charged with making sure minority students have equitable access to education and helping the district fulfill its mission: “welcoming all learners.” Over the course of last year, several DEC members expressed frustration at how little progress they felt was being made. “It’s like we can’t move,” DEC member, Black parent, and former WAPS administrator Maurella Cunningham said. “It’s like when you’re in a dream, and you can’t accomplish things. School Board OKs $20K budgeting software (12/18/2020)
Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) will spend about $20,000 each year on a tool for developing budgets, analyzing data and completing reports after WAPS Board members approved the tool at their December 3 meeting. The Forecast5 analytics tool would help district staff create multi-year budgets that project out five years and develop budgets based on various scenarios, including different amounts of funding the district could receive, finance director Kristy Millering said at the School Board’s November 19 meeting. The approval came after budget cuts to district programs and activities in past years, which prompted debates over WAPS’ administrative spending. A 2018 Winona Post investigation discovered that WAPS spent almost 25 percent more on administration than districts of a similar size. ....
