This year’s Lighting of the Osmanthus Gardens has been a roaring success, with an estimated 15,000 taking in the spectacular lantern festival over seven evenings.
Festival director, Hastings District councillor Kevin Watkins, said the festival, in its thirteenth year, had attracted the most visitors ever, “by far”.
The biggest nights were Friday and Saturday, when Auckland-based Chinese musician Annie Gong was playing, however Sunday was also “incredibly busy”, he said. “Everyone’s reactions were just wonderful. They were blown away. We had so many of our own Hastings families going through the gardens, but also people from all over New Zealand: Tauranga, Auckland, Wellington. Some of come to Hastings particularly to visit to the festival.” ....

International artist Annie
Gong – a one woman orchestra – is due to arrive in
Hastings tomorrow, to play at the Lighting of the Osmanthus
Gardens lantern festival on Friday and Saturday.
Based
in New Zealand but playing internationally until COVID-19
grounded her last year, China-born Gong has spent the last
12 months thrilling Kiwi audiences with her blend of Chinese
fusion, classical pieces, and rock music, on piano
accordion.
Festival organiser, Hastings District
councillor Kevin Watkins, said Gong, who started playing the
instrument at age five and trained at the Tianjin
Conservatory of Music, had performed with major symphony ....

The 40th anniversary of the Hastings-Guilin Sister City
relationship has been formally marked, with the mayors of
both cities signing a reaffirmation document.
At a
ceremony in the Osmanthus Gardens in Cornwall Park yesterday
(March 3), Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst highlighted the
benefits of the relationship, including that hundreds of
Hastings teachers, scientists, business people, councillors,
students, musicians and cultural group members had travelled
to Guilin over the four decades, to experience life in
Guilin.
In return, Hastings had hosted numerous groups
from Guilin.
