Heading out on a boat, as the shoreline recedes, all worries seem to slip away. Whangaroa Harbour in the Far North is a tranquil place, but the harbour holds stories of intrigue, tragedy and very good fishing. A 90-minute guided tour with Whangaroa Harbour Tours really gets beneath the surface. In the distance, we see Taratara, a small flat-topped mountain. According to local stories, Taratara was blessed with two wives, but this incurred the jealousy of, Maungataniwha, who requested one of the wives for himself. After three refusals, Maungataniwha and Taratara came to blows and Taratara lost his head, which sits as a rocky knoll on Ohakiri, above the township of Whangaroa.
