According to local stories, Taratara was blessed with two wives, but this incurred the jealousy of, Maungataniwha, who requested one of the wives for himself. After three refusals, Maungataniwha and Taratara came to blows and Taratara lost his head, which sits as a rocky knoll on Ohakiri, above the township of Whangaroa.
