Orsted has installed the first turbine at the 1400MW Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm off the east coast of England.
The developer said that the first load out of turbines left the port of Hull earlier this week via DEME Offshore s installation vessel Sea Challenger.
The vessel was equipped with components for four individual turbines, including the new 81-metre long blades manufactured at Siemens Gamesa s blade factory in Hull.
Hornsea 2 will feature 165 Siemens Gamesa 8MW turbines once complete in 2022.
Each turbine will stand 200 metres above sea level, with a swept diameter of 167 metres.
Orsted Hornsea 2 senior programme director Patrick Harnett said: “I am incredibly proud of the way our teams have worked collaboratively during this difficult time to ensure that our plans for installation were able to go ahead as planned.
Orsted and South Korea’s POSCO Group have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to expand their relationship in the areas of offshore wind and hydrogen.
POSCO will apply the group s capabilities to support the development of Orsted s 1.6GW offshore wind projects off the coast of Incheon City.
Orsted and POSCO will also conduct feasibility studies on potential collaboration on renewable hydrogen, as part of the collaboration.
South Korea has set a target of installing 12GW offshore wind capacity by 2030.
In September 2020, President Moon Jae-in further announced the Green New Deal which targets net zero emissions by 2050.
In December 2020, POSCO Group joined the South Korean government s decarbonisation declaration, announcing its ambition to become a leading renewable hydrogen company and reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.
